From the past few years, Data Science has become one of the most demanding skills in the world. Analytics space has been growing rapidly and there is no shortage of people as many professionals are looking to switch their career to boost. Even professionals with data science are busy equipping themselves with additional skills to enhance or add to their skill-set. Take Vanaja Pagiri for example, an SMBS alumnus completed the Data Science course in august last year. While she was already working in the analytics space, the Data Science program from SMBS helped her to take her career to a different level altogether.
She was working in a consulting company in Hyderabad and her work involved using various functions like retention models and logistic regression. But since her background was engineering and work ended up becoming a very mechanical process. She was told what to do and how to do though she was not clear with the mechanisms behind a lot of the algorithms she was using. Once she joined the Data Science course at SMBS, a lot of assignments were closely related to the work she was doing. As a result, she was able to connect the dots and gain a deeper understanding of all the techniques she had been using. The workshop sessions with the industry experts were very interesting and useful too, as we were able to get a better idea of how analytics is applied in various domains such as supply chain and banking.
One of the great advantages Vanaja had was that the course didn’t disrupt her work in any manner. The sessions were held over weekends in Hyderabad, where she is based. So she didn’t have to miss any of her work schedules to accommodate the course. However, Vanaja herself admits that it is not simply a task of attending sessions and completing the assignments. Becoming an expert at analytics requires a reasonable amount of committment to practice over a period of time.
There is a lot to learn and digest in a very short span of time, as the course material is exhaustive, she says. We should invest our mind and soul about 4-5 hours each day in order to fully get acquainted with all the new things we are learning. However, it will be very beneficial in future. Vanaja was selected for the interview process with Future Group as a result of the course. And Mr. Rajesh Nakka (SMBS founder) was very helpful and gave us sufficient guidance when it comes to career planning. Vanaja is very glad with the program and the way things are going right now in her organization.
At whatever stage we are at in life, studying is a continuous process. Learning Analytics is also a continuous process as technology keeps changing, there will be new techniques and software applications to learn and update our skills regularly.
